Typical COVID-19 tests can sometimes take days to come back, which can cause concern and anxiety or delay work authorization. Fortunately, there are rapid tests for COVID-19 that can give you results quickly. In this blog, the healthcare professionals at TIB Diagnostics explain all about rapid testing.
What are rapid tests?
At TIB Diagnostics, we offer three types of tests: COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test, COVID-19 PCR Test, and COVID-19 Antibody Test. Rapid antigen tests do not test for the virus itself, but for a protein, the body produces when it fights off the virus. The rapid antigen test provides quick results, in 15 to 30 minutes in many cases.
As noted, we also offer COVID-19 PCR tests, which test for the virus itself, and COVID-19 antibody tests, which can see if you've had the virus in the past, but getting results may take longer. trials.
How do rapid tests work?
During a rapid antigen test, your provider takes a sample of mucus with a nasopharyngeal swab or nasal swab. You may be asked to blow your nose to bring a better sample to take. The swab travels up the nose and stays there for a few seconds to collect the best possible sample.
Your provider then removes the swab, places the sample in a collection tube or test card, and follows the instructions provided by the test manufacturer. Results can be diagnosed visually or with an instrument analyzer.
How accurate is the rapid test?
Positive results from rapid tests are usually very accurate. False positives are a possibility, but unlikely. False negatives, on the other hand, are more reasonable. This does not mean that all negative results are false, but negative results may need to be followed up with a standard PCR test to confirm. This is especially true if you have symptoms of COVID-19 but get a negative rapid test result.
To make sure you don't have COVID-19, it is recommended that you receive two negative results, including at least one from a standard PCR test. The tests must be fully covered by your insurance at this time, and if you do not have insurance, there will be no charge to you.
How is testing done at TIB Diagnostics?
An appointment is required for testing at TIB Diagnostics. Visits without an appointment are not accepted at this time. Rapid tests are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon arrival, you will stay in your vehicle, where your test will take place.
