The differences between rapid PCR and RT-PCR Covid tests

With Covid still prevalent in many of our communities, testing remains more important than ever. It is important to know which test is best for you and your family before making a decision about which test to take. Read on to know the differences between rapid PCR and RT-PCR tests.

The different types of Covid-19 tests

The rapid PCR test

The rapid PCR test will detect a current Covid infection through a nasal swab. It is designed to detect genetic material belonging to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

PCR test results can be processed on-site and are available the same day, which is perfect if you need to travel or get tested quickly.

The RT-PCR test

The RT-PCR test is sometimes called a “molecular” test. Like rapid PCR, this test is administered through a nasal swab; however, it can also be a saliva or throat sample. This test is considered the gold standard of Covid testing and is very accurate.

The sample for this test must be sent to a laboratory for processing, and the results are usually available within three business days.

Antigen test

Antigen tests use a different type of technology to detect Covid-19 and are designed to detect certain proteins on the surface of the virus. This test examines a sample of fluids taken from the sinus cavity or throat.

Antigen tests are also known as rapid tests and results are usually available within fifteen minutes. This test is known to have a higher rate of inaccurate results than the RT-PCR test.

Antibody test

The antibody test looks for a previous Covid-19 infection through the antibodies your body develops in response to the infection. It requires a blood test performed by finger prick or blood draw. This test can be sent to a laboratory for processing or processed on-site. This test is ideal if you want to know if your body has been exposed to the virus, but it should not be used to detect an ongoing infection.

The best test for you

When considering getting tested, the first step is to see how quickly you need results. The biggest difference between rapid PCR, RT-PCR, and antigen testing is the delay.

  • Rapid antigen test provides results in fifteen minutes

  • Rapid PCR test provides results in thirty minutes

  • RT-PCR returns results within 3 business days

In addition to a time limit, you need to consider precision. False positives and false negatives are more common with antigen testing.
